Moreton Island is a gem!
Moreton Island “The Gem of South East Queensland” is one of the best experiences that Australia has to offer. Brisbane is fortunate in having on its doorstep one of Australia’s largest sand islands, making Moreton Island perfect for that much needed getaway. Just across the bay from civilisation, Moreton is quickly being discovered as an unspoilt paradise for people wanting to relax and enjoy nature. This is a place where the crashing of the waves sets the pace of your day.
Tall sand dunes, miles of sandy beaches, crystal clear creeks and lagoons, coastal heath, rocky headlands and abundant wildflowers make Moreton Island a jewel in Moreton Bay.

The island has a rich history, from early Aboriginal settlements to the site of Queensland’s first and only whaling station at Tangalooma, which operated between 1952 and 1962. These days, swimming, snorkelling and 4WD trails keep visitors occupied (in fact, the island is a 4WD-only domain). It’s also home to some of the most beautiful freshwater lakes, colored sands, rugged cliffs, sand hills and also the largest sand dune in the world, Mt Tempest. An untouched paradise, Moreton Island is the perfect destination for a holiday, weekend getaway or one-day island adventure.
What about no roads! Sounds great. There is more traffic on the beaches here than on the Bruce Highway.
Moreton Island played its part as one of Australia’s major coastal defence bases during both World Wars – at its peak 900 troops called the island home. What remains of this history is a number of concrete bunkers, shelters and gun batteries throughout the island. Check out the bunkers at Cowan Cowan or Rous Battery.
